Overview of PSAT Exam

What is PSAT Exam ?

The PSAT, or Preliminary SAT, is a standardized test primarily taken by 11th-grade students as preparation for the SAT exam. It mirrors the format, question types, and timing of the SAT but is slightly less difficult. In addition to being a practice test, the PSAT serves another important purpose — it is the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship Program, allowing high-performing students to earn recognition and scholarship opportunities. While the PSAT does not include an essay and is a bit easier than the SAT, it still assesses critical reading, writing, and math skills. Performing well on the PSAT helps students identify their strengths and areas for improvement before taking the SAT.

Who should take the PSAT examination?

The PSAT is typically taken by high school students, especially those in Grade 10 or 11, who are preparing for the SAT. It's ideal for students who want early exposure to standardized testing and wish to assess their strengths and weaknesses before taking the SAT. Additionally, 11th-grade students aiming to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program should take the PSAT, as it serves as the official qualifying test for this prestigious recognition.

In which countries is the PSAT accepted?

The PSAT is primarily administered in the United States, but it is also available in many international schools around the world. Countries with American-curriculum or international schools often offer the PSAT to students preparing for U.S. college admissions. While the PSAT itself is not used for university admission, it is globally recognized as a valuable preparatory tool for students intending to take the SAT and apply to colleges in the U.S., Canada, and other countries that accept SAT scores.

Different Types of PSAT Tests

PSAT 8/9

The PSAT 8/9 is designed for students in the 8th and 9th grades. This version of the test is slightly shorter in duration compared to other PSAT tests, with 20 minutes less time. It includes 19 questions and helps educators evaluate a student’s academic progress. Since there is no fixed national date for this test, students should speak with their school’s guidance counselor to schedule it. Scores for the PSAT 8/9 range from 240 to 1440.

PSAT 10

The PSAT 10 is intended for students in the 10th grade. It shares the same format, question types, and difficulty level as the PSAT/NMSQT but does not qualify students for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The test is administered annually in the spring and lasts 2 hours and 45 minutes. The scoring range for the PSAT 10 is from 320 to 1520.

PSAT/NMSQT

The PSAT/NMSQT is mainly taken by 11th-grade students, although 10th graders are also allowed to participate. It is held every year during the fall and is identical in structure to the PSAT 10. Scoring high on this version can qualify students for the prestigious U.S. National Merit Scholarship Program. The duration of the test is 2 hours and 45 minutes, and the score ranges from 320 to 1520.

Sections of PSAT with Syllabus

Reading Section

The Reading section of the PSAT lasts for 60 minutes. It includes passages that students must carefully read, analyze, and answer questions about. The passages come from a variety of subjects including literature, historical documents, social sciences, and natural sciences. This section evaluates a student’s reading comprehension, ability to interpret evidence, and understanding of vocabulary in context.

Writing and Language Section

The Writing and Language section is 35 minutes long. In this section, students will read non-fiction passages that may present arguments on topics related to humanities, careers, sciences, social studies, and history. Students are expected to identify and correct grammatical errors, improve sentence structure, and demonstrate their editing and vocabulary skills. This section measures a student’s command over standard English conventions and clarity in expression.

Math Section

The Math section has the longest duration—70 minutes—and includes both multiple-choice questions and student-produced response questions (also known as “grid-ins”). It is divided into two parts: one where the use of a calculator is allowed, and another where it is not. Questions in this section cover Algebra I and II, geometry, and some basic trigonometry. This section tests a student's problem-solving ability, analytical thinking, and understanding of mathematical concepts.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
