The ACT (American College Testing) is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States and Canada. It assesses high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work. The test covers four academic skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. An optional writing test measures skill in planning and writing a short essay.
The ACT is typically taken by high school students in grades 11 and 12. However, students in earlier grades may also take the test if they feel prepared. There are no official prerequisites, but fluency in English is assumed.
The ACT consists of four mandatory multiple-choice sections and one optional writing section. The details are as follows:
Section | Number of Questions | Time Allotted | Score Range |
---|---|---|---|
English | 75 | 45 minutes | 1–36 |
Mathematics | 60 | 60 minutes | 1–36 |
Reading | 40 | 35 minutes | 1–36 |
Science | 40 | 35 minutes | 1–36 |
Writing (Optional) | 1 essay | 40 minutes | 2–12 |
The total testing time is 2 hours and 55 minutes without the writing section and 3 hours and 35 minutes with the writing section. The composite score is the average of the four mandatory sections, rounded to the nearest whole number.
In the United States and Canada, the ACT is administered seven times a year: in September, October, December, February, April, June, and July. For candidates outside the US and Canada, the test is available five times a year: in September, October, December, April, and June.
Below are the upcoming test dates for 2025:
Test Date | Regular Registration Deadline | Late Registration Deadline | Photo Upload & Standby Deadline |
---|---|---|---|
February 8, 2025 | January 3, 2025 | January 24, 2025 | January 31, 2025 |
April 5, 2025 | February 28, 2025 | March 16, 2025 | March 28, 2025 |
June 14, 2025 | May 9, 2025 | May 27, 2025 | June 6, 2025 |
July 12, 2025* | June 6, 2025 | June 20, 2025 | July 4, 2025 |
*No test centers are scheduled in New York for the July test date.
Each of the four mandatory sections (English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science) is scored on a scale of 1 to 36. The composite score is the average of these four scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. The optional writing test is scored separately on a scale of 2 to 12 and does not affect the composite score.
The ACT is a critical component of the college admissions process in the United States and Canada. Understanding its structure, content, and scheduling is essential for effective preparation. Students are encouraged to consult with their school counselors and visit the official ACT website for the most current information and resources.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
