The Selective High School Placement Test is a computer-based test that has 4 sections. Students sit the placement test in an external test centre where computers are provided. All questions (multiple-choice and the writing question) are answered using the computer.

The Writing Test consists of a topic which the student must write about according to the instructions. This test assesses the creativity of the student’s ideas and their ability to write effectively for a purpose and audience. The test also assesses:
Important: The student’s writing must address the given topic, otherwise it will be marked lower, regardless of their fluency or creativity.
The exam takes approximately four hours to complete.
The exam comprises of a series of tests including multiple choice questions and written tasks:
Reasoning tasks in Reading and Mathematics assess a student’s ability to use their life and academic knowledge and skills and apply them to problems and tasks using the information provided in the task.
General ability tasks assess a student’s ability to learn in each of the tested areas by allowing the student to demonstrate their higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills.
The Writing Test will comprise of two tasks.
