ISEB Pre-Test: Overview

The ISEB Pre-Tests are a set of four online, age-standardised assessments used by many UK independent schools for admissions. They are typically taken by students in Year 6 or Year 7 and measure both academic attainment and potential. The results are shared with all schools a child applies to, so only one test is needed per academic year.

When? — Usually between October and February of Year 6, or as specified by the school.
Format: — Online, adaptive, multiple-choice. Total duration: about 2 hours 15 minutes.

Registration & Results

  • How to register: Parents/guardians register their child via the ISEB Guardian Portal. Registration is free, quick, and can be edited if needed.
  • One test per year: Results are shared with all schools applied to; retesting in the same year is not allowed.
  • Results: Schools receive the results; parents may be informed by the schools. High scores may lead to further assessment or direct offers.

How to Support Your Child’s Preparation

  • Familiarise your child with the test format and question styles.
  • Encourage regular, short study sessions rather than last-minute cramming.
  • Practice with mock tests to build confidence and timing.
  • Focus on overall wellbeing: sleep, nutrition, and relaxation matter.
  • Promote a positive attitude—mistakes are part of learning.
Holistic Approach: Preparation should reduce anxiety, not add to it. Use a balanced routine and celebrate progress.
Adaptive Test Tip: Remind your child they cannot return to previous questions—read each question carefully before submitting.
Remember: The ISEB Pre-Test is just one part of the admissions process. Schools consider a range of factors for entry.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
